The Pelvic Floor and Fall Prevention

With winter just around the corner it's important to think about fall prevention.

Did you know that a weak pelvic floor is linked to a higher risk of falling?

If you have any type of bladder control issues, you are more likely to fall. 

Why is that?!? 

Because our bodies are a cohesive unit.  No part or system works in isolation, it all works together like a well choreographed dance.

This class is about tuning into and honing the connection between the thoracic diaphragm and the pelvic floor (or pelvic diaphragm).

LET'S GET OUT OF OUR OWN WAY!

Rather than focusing on specific pelvic floor exercises and specifically contracting the pelvic floor we'll use awareness, breath and movement of the body as a WHOLE to enhance the quality of our pelvic floor muscles.

Through ultra sound, it has been shown that when we use our breathing diaphragm properly, the pelvic floor naturally follows suit

Through ultra sound, it has also been shown that when we over-recruit the abdominal muscles we can interrupt this natural rhythm between the two diaphragms.  This causes an increase in abdominal pressure and can contribute to various bladder, bowel and pelvic floor issues.

While it's not the ONLY approach, in this workshop we will focus on:

moving through different positions and planes of motion

while keeping our breathing diaphragm freely moving like a jelly fish

and noticing how our pelvic floor / diaphragm responds.

We will also work on the strength and reaction time of the upper extremities because that is where injury happens in 50% of falls in those 65 yrs and older.  If you're going to fall, you want to be able to catch yourself to minimize or avoid injury.

  • a yoga mat
  • two blocks

  • a scarf or theraband
